Halloween at the Hagwon

At this point Halloween has come and gone (and now we're past Thanksgiving), but there are always fun pictures floating around! Halloween isn't as big a deal here in Korea, but the schools like to highlight the holiday and apparently it's just another excuse for older Koreans to go drinking. That said, we had a good time at our hagwon's celebration.

The timing was quite interesting though as we were told that some of the parents would be coming in to observe class before our "party". So we each had a couple of parents who had come in to see how class works and we, of course, had to be on our best behavior and show off.

Zach had planned ahead (I'm not sure if this was intentional or not, or at least not how intentional) and had brought his horse head mask, as you can see above. This was a hit with the kids and our director. I, however, did not plan ahead, but before we left the States I did manage to snag a few silly things from Party City. Thus, I donned a silly moustache which everyone seemed to love. I also managed to remember the pirate hat that had been left by one of the teachers before us. A pirate with a moustache, it worked!

The kids dressed up and we were instructed twice during the day to hand out candy. The parents helped earlier in the day for the first round, the kids would knock on the door and come to all of us for treats. They knew to say trick or treat, but I used the time to advise them to also say thank you! The later round of trick or treating with the older kids was just 3 teachers each in a classroom and that was different in its own way.

Expecting the Unexpected

Happy post-Halloween! Aren't we so very decorative for Halloween?

More pictures and info to follow, but I wanted to briefly talk about expecting the unexpected here in Korea. By that I mean your director may tell you to jump, but you may not quite understand that and they're telling you how high without giving you any time to process. Then suddenly the carpet is pulled out from under you and you have to hope for a graceful landing!

That was my reaction when I was suddenly told today (less than an hour before it was happening) that I am now going to be teaching a small class of 4 kids and doing story time with them each day. The rollover/change is because of a new student that started today (November 1st) and because they apparently want them to start taking classes with a foreign teacher. Hi there, that'd be me.

So now I continue to have my three 40 minute breaks a week (they're so generous!), but at least I get the full time and now instead of having a class of 9 to 15 students (depending on the day of the week) I either don't have them at all or just have 4 kids instead. I suppose I also have a longer break between my class with the older girls too twice a week. So that means that I have a little over an an hour of free time twice a week. You win some, you lose some I suppose. I think I might be coming out more on the winning side this time, surprisingly.

Anyway, there are several posts incoming in the near future, I just need to finish them. I hope you had a Happy Halloween and most of all, I hope that those of you in the US on the East Coast are hanging in there after Sandy. Sending good thoughts your way!

Looking snazzy, blog

This post isn't anything terribly exciting, just to let you know that the blog look has been updated for fall! Since it is fall we've been talking a lot about Halloween and pumpkins and the school was recently decorated for the upcoming occasion. Because it's been nice out, it seems like it's picnic season though.  The picture above is from our Korean bbq lunch we had on Friday and we are going on another picnic next Friday.

They really went all out with the decorations on Friday. Look at all those pumpkins!

This is outside of my classroom (Silly Sally). They're being good, mostly.

More ghosts and pumpkins.

The lovely decorations outside of Zach's room, Rainbow Fish.

Even though this got me a "talking to" by the director, the kids had fun making their skeletons and then I helped them name each and every one of them. It's hard to see, but the one on the far right is Tomas's and he decided to name it Pooh. Fine motor activities like cutting out skeleton parts are good for 4-5 year olds, but then you run into the cultural differences.

So I saw this bat in Zach's room and had to ask him who did it. He told me that his student Lily drew this bat.  I am in love. All I can think of is "rainbow croissant"! <3

This is Stella being all cute (she can be a drama queen too, don't let her fool you), she's all dressed up in her school uniform. Isn't the tie a cute touch?
